How to Get an ISBN in India — Free Registration Guide 2025

Good news: getting an ISBN in India is free and managed directly by the Government of India. Bad news: the official website and process confuse nearly every first-time applicant. This guide walks you through every step, what documents you'll actually need, how long it takes, and what to do if something goes wrong.

What Is an ISBN and Why Do You Need One?

An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a 13-digit identifier that uniquely identifies your book. It's required to sell your book in major retail stores and online marketplaces, list it in library catalogues, and have it indexed by book databases worldwide.

Without an ISBN, Amazon India can still list your book with an ASIN, and KDP assigns a free ISBN for print books. But for professional publishing — especially if you want library distribution, academic adoption, or bookstore placement — you need an official Indian ISBN.

Key fact: ISBN registration in India is 100% free. If anyone charges you for an ISBN itself (not for the service of applying on your behalf), that is a scam or overcharging. The government does not charge.

Who Issues ISBNs in India?

ISBNs in India are issued by the Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency for ISBN (RRRNAISBN), under the National Book Trust, Ministry of Education, Government of India. The official portal is isbnindiaebooks.gov.in.

This is the only legitimate source of ISBNs for Indian publications. International agencies like Bowker (USA) will issue ISBNs that work globally but will list your book as published in the USA — not ideal for Indian publications.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply for an ISBN in India

1

Create an Account on isbnindiaebooks.gov.in

Visit the official portal and click "Register." You'll create an account as either an individual author/publisher or an organization/publisher. For self-publishing, choose individual. Verify your email address to activate the account.

2

Gather Your Documents

Before starting the application, have these ready:

  • Identity proof: Aadhaar card, PAN card, or passport (PDF, under 2MB)
  • Address proof: Electricity bill, bank statement, or Aadhaar (last 3 months)
  • Title page: A draft of your book's title page showing title, subtitle, author name, publisher name (even "Self-Published" is acceptable)
  • Verso/copyright page: The back of the title page showing copyright notice, year, and publisher information
  • For organizations: Company registration certificate, GST certificate if applicable
3

Fill in the Book Details

You'll be asked for: full title and subtitle, author name(s), language, subject category (use the Dewey Decimal System — most books fall under 800s for literature, 300s for social sciences, etc.), format (print/ebook/both), and expected publication date.

Important: The title you register cannot be changed after ISBN assignment. Make sure your title is finalized.

4

Submit the Application

Upload all documents and submit. You'll receive an application reference number. Save this — you'll use it to track your application status.

5

Wait for Processing (2–4 Weeks)

The RRRNAISBN reviews applications manually. Typical processing time is 2–4 weeks. You can check your status on the portal with your reference number. If there are issues, they'll contact you via email for clarification or additional documents.

6

Receive Your ISBN and Generate the Barcode

Once approved, your ISBN is displayed on the portal. Download the official certificate. To generate the barcode for your book cover, use a free ISBN barcode generator (many are available online). The barcode should be placed on the back cover, bottom right, with the ISBN number printed below it.

Common Mistakes That Delay Your Application

  • Uploading illegible scans. Documents must be clear PDFs. Photographed documents on phones often fail quality checks.
  • Mismatched name. The name in your identity proof must exactly match the name you register as author/publisher.
  • Incomplete title page. The title page must show all required information — title, author, and publisher name.
  • Wrong subject category. Selecting the wrong Dewey category doesn't block your ISBN, but it affects library cataloguing. Research your category carefully.
  • Multiple formats, single application. If you're publishing both print and eBook, you need to apply for two ISBNs — one for each format.

Do You Need an ISBN for an eBook Only?

Technically, no. Amazon KDP assigns a free ASIN to all eBooks, which functions as a product identifier. For Kindle-only publications, many authors skip the ISBN entirely without any practical consequence.

However, if you want your eBook listed in library systems, sold on platforms other than Amazon, or indexed in formal bibliographic databases — you'll need an ISBN for the digital edition too.

What About Publishing in Multiple Languages?

If you translate and publish your book in another Indian language, each language edition requires its own ISBN. For example, an English original, a Hindi translation, and a Tamil translation of the same book would need three separate ISBNs. The ISBN application process is the same for each.

Free Mind Consultancy offers professional book translation services for major Indian languages. Our team handles the ISBN application for each translated edition as part of the service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ISBN registration free in India?

Yes, completely free. ISBNs are issued by the Government of India at no cost. Apply directly at isbnindiaebooks.gov.in. Any fee charged is for a third-party application service, not the ISBN itself.

How long does ISBN registration take in India?

Typically 2–4 weeks for a complete, error-free application. Incomplete documents or mismatches can extend this to 6–8 weeks as you'll need to resubmit.

Can a self-published author apply for ISBN in India?

Yes. You register as the publisher (self-publisher) and apply directly. There is no requirement to have a formal publishing company. Your name as "publisher" is perfectly acceptable.

What if my ISBN application is rejected?

Rejections are usually due to incomplete documents or incorrect information. The agency will email you specifying what's missing. Resubmit with the corrected information. There's no penalty for resubmission and it won't affect future applications.

Do I need to submit a copy of my book after publication?

Yes. Under the Delivery of Books and Newspapers (Public Libraries) Act, 1954, publishers are required to send copies of every published book to designated libraries including the National Library, Kolkata and others. For self-publishers, sending 5 copies total fulfills this legal obligation.
