You Can Now Run Ads Inside ChatGPT
Paid placement is starting to show up inside AI assistant answers — a new, largely unproven channel sitting next to a Google Ads and Meta Ads stack that's had two decades to mature. That timing gap is exactly why it's interesting, and exactly why it needs caution.
Sponsored vs organic — a real distinction
An organic citation is the model choosing to mention you because your content answered the question well. A sponsored placement is paid for and labeled as such. Both can appear in the same answer, and a business can theoretically earn one without the other — they're separate games with separate rules.
What's actually known right now
- Rollout is limited and market-dependent — availability where you operate needs checking directly on the platform, not assumed from a press release.
- Targeting and measurement tooling is still maturing compared to Google or Meta's mature attribution stack.
- Pricing models and auction mechanics are still being worked out publicly — expect them to change.
Should you test it yet?
A small, controlled test budget makes sense for category leaders with margin to experiment and learn early. It is not yet a channel to bet a meaningful share of a quarter's ad budget on — the measurement tools to prove it worked aren't mature enough for that bet today.
Read this with healthy skepticism
- “New channel, early-mover advantage” is also exactly the pitch made for every new ad platform in history — some paid off, many didn't.
- Evaluate on real CPL/CPA data once you have it, not on hype about the category.
